Yoga Focus: Downward facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

This is one of my most favorite poses, because it not only uses all four limbs, our arms and legs equally (just like our furry friend it’s named after), it also activates us deeply in our center.  The attention to the equal use of arms and legs creates much activation for the muscles and openness to the joints.  Consider when we press our hands into the mat fully, then stretch our arms, the extension takes us into our shoulder blades and the postural muscles that define our trunk.  This type of connection leads to a lovely lengthening of the spine, an expansion in our breath and so much more. Inspired by my practice and Iyengar teacher Mary Dunn in the book American Yoga.
